Citrix MetaFrame XP is a remote access/application publishing product built on the Citrix Systems’ thin client protocol and used to connect to any Virtuozzo-based Container. To start using Citrix to access your Containers on the given Hardware Node, you should:
- Install and enable the Terminal Services component on the Node;
- Install and configure the Citrix MetaFrame XP application on the Node.
After you have successfully completed the aforementioned operations on your Hardware Node, you can use a Citrix ICA Client on the Host OS or on any other server on the network to connect to any of your Containers on this Node by means of the Citrix MetaFrame XP application.
For example, if you have the Program Neighbourhood Client installed on your server, you can selectPrograms –> ICA Client –> Citrix Program Neighbourhood on the Windows Start menu to launch the Citrix ICA Client software. In the opened window, you should then double-click the Add ICA Connection icon to invoke the wizard that will help you create a new ICA connection to be used to access your Container.
Citrix Presentaion Server
Presentation Server allows delivery of applications as a service—providing on-demand access to users, while affording the flexibility to leverage future application architectures.
Citrix XenApp is an on-demand application delivery solution that enables any Windows® application to be virtualized, centralized, and managed in the datacenter and instantly delivered as a service to users anywhere on any device. Citrix XenApp (formerly Citrix WinFrame Server, Citrix MetaFrame Server and Citrix Presentation Server) is a thin client product that allows users to connect to their corporate applications. XenApp can host applications on central servers and allow users to interact with them remotely or stream and deliver them to user devices for local execution.
Differences in Versions
Most of the differences between all versions of MetaFrame, Presentation Server and XenApp are: OS version supported Version of Terminal Services/Remote Desktop Service supported Features Functionality Security
If you did nothing but publish the server’s desktop and say had Word installed on the server, there would be very little difference between the 1994 product and the 2012 product. The look and feel will be different between NT4 and 2008 R2 but the functionality is basically the same.
Comparisions between all the versions is given in the PDF at Link
On-demand application delivery Citrix XenApp is an on-demand application delivery solution that enables any Windows® application to be virtualized, centralized, and managed in the datacenter and instantly delivered as a service to users anywhere on any device. In use by over 100 million users worldwide, XenApp delivers on the promise of proven application compatibility. Compared to traditional application deployment technology, virtual application delivery with XenApp enables organizations to improve application management by: •Centralizing applications in the datacenter to reduce costs •Controlling and encrypting access to data and applications to improve security •Delivering applications instantly to users anywhere
Why deliver applications on demand? Virtual application delivery lets IT manage a single instance of each application in an application hub in the datacenter. Applications are then delivered via application streaming to Windows PCs for offline use or run on high-powered servers in the datacenter for online use on any device or operating system.
Why choose XenApp for on-demand application delivery? Whether application virtualization or session virtualization technology is used, XenApp ensures that users receive the highest quality experience through Citrix HDX technology. HDX adapts virtual application delivery and access based on each user’s device, network, and location to ensure an optimal experience. XenApp enables enterprise class scalability for any size business and ensures that virtual application delivery and management is secure by design. XenApp integrates the tools and infrastructure needed to help control, measure, and monitor performance to ensure that service level agreements and corporate security requirements are met. Application virtualization technology, session virtualization technology, and centralized application management gives users direct access to Windows applications from any device, using a web browser via Citrix Receiver. Citrix Receiver delivers applications to over 30 operating systems.
